Tunable materials clear the way for advanced optics

A multi-institutional team of researchers has developed a way to precisely engineer the temperatures at which vanadium dioxide—a material used in high-tech applications ranging from homes to satellites—will undergo phase transition. Their work, published today in the journal Nano Letters, could lead to new types of tunable materials for optics, camouflage and thermal regulation.

Materials Engineering welcomes new faculty Dr. Maria Okuniewski

Dr. Okuniewski has been at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) for the past seven years as a research and development scientist and engineer. The over-arching goals of her research are focused on understanding the connections between the microstructure of nuclear materials and fuels and their mechanical properties. She studies changes in microstructure as a function of radiation damage and/or fabrication and processing of real-world nuclear systems.
