Purdue-Colombia Collaborative Outreach, "Project Interchange"
The School of Materials Engineering has just begun the Purdue-Colombia collaborative outreach, “Project Interchange” with the Santo Domingo Savio library and community as well as the Universidad de Antioquia in Medellin. The Purdue team consists of Prof. Carol Handwerker, Alex Bruce, Valerie Wiesner, Jairo Diaz-Amaya, Pylin Sarobol, Carolina Vivas, and Alehandro Castaneda Uribe. This program aims to increase the knowledge of Nanoscience in high school students around Medellin (impoverished area) and to encourage them in university study in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) disciplines. Online conference calls are held weekly to facilitate presentations and activity demonstrations. The topisc and activities covered include introduction to nanotechnology, atomic size scale, and crystal structures (making crystal structures from pingpong balls), Forms of carbon - nanotubes, graphene, diamond, graphite (making carbon nanotube structures from balloons), Nanocellulose and the beauty of plant derived nanotechnology, and Characterization of nanostructures.
