Maximizing My Time and Opportunity Through Purdue’s 4+1 MSE Program

Samuel Budagher
As a senior in Materials Engineering, I realized I could make the most of my time at Purdue by joining the 4+1 combined master’s program. Since I was already ahead in my undergraduate credits, it made sense to use that extra time to earn a master’s degree, something that would strengthen my career prospects and open doors to research-focused organizations like Sandia National Labs, where I hope to work one day.

What I appreciate most about the program is its flexibility. Unlike undergrad, I can choose the classes that truly align with my interests and career goals, whether that’s materials processing, steel and aluminium manufacturing, or industry-oriented electives. I’ve already started taking graduate courses, and they feel more relevant and engaging because I chose them based on what I actually want to learn. The program also offers more opportunities for research and hands-on industry experience, which makes learning feel real and impactful.

For anyone considering the 4+1 path, my advice is simple: plan early. If you can get ahead in your credits, this program lets you earn a master’s degree faster, gain deeper technical knowledge, and enter the workforce with a strong advantage both professionally and financially.
