Building Experience and Connections Through Purdue’s 4+1 MSE Program
Landon Garrity
Choosing Purdue’s 4+1 MSE program was an easy decision for me. The biggest advantage was being able to double count credits during my senior year, saving both time and money while earning an advanced degree. Staying at Purdue also gives me more time to explore opportunities, strengthen my resume, and continue building connections within a familiar and supportive environment.
My undergraduate experience helped shape my interests in semiconductors and metal processing through courses like MSE 270 and 370, which explore bonding and molecular interactions. Through the 4+1 program, I look forward to expanding my knowledge in these areas and gaining research experience through directed industry projects. Having previously completed a study abroad semester in Germany through the GEAR program, I gained valuable exposure to different research environments and learned how to adapt to new academic and cultural settings.
What excites me most about the 4+1 program is the opportunity to work closely with faculty and industry partners while deepening my technical expertise. I’m especially grateful for mentors like Rosemary and Dr. Inna Elsner, whose guidance has helped me clarify my goals and push myself to grow.
