Broadening My Horizons in Materials Science and Beyond
Katrina Evancho
When I began looking at graduate programs, I wanted to expand my knowledge of materials science without being tied to a research-focused thesis. Purdue’s Professional Master’s Program in Materials Engineering stood out because it offered the flexibility to take a wide variety of courses across engineering and management, giving me the chance to explore both technical and business perspectives.
Through advanced MSE courses, I’ve developed a stronger understanding of the vast applications of materials science. Just as valuable, my electives in the business school have helped me see not only the how of engineering, but also the why—the strategic decisions that drive industry. One of the most impactful classes I’ve taken is Negotiations in Organizations. It was unlike any course I had experienced before, and it prepared me with skills that extend far beyond technical knowledge.
A highlight of my journey has been the mentorship of Dr. Elsner, who has guided me through course selections, encouraged me to explore management electives, and provided personalized career coaching. Her support has been instrumental in preparing me for my next step.
The program has also helped me professionally, allowing me to turn my internship with Pratt & Whitney as an alloy development intern into a full-time role in their Engineering Development Rotational Program.
For me, the true value of the PMP lies in the diversity of courses and perspectives it offers. To future students: take full advantage of this breadth—it’s an incredible way to prepare for the many dimensions of a career in materials engineering.
