Purdue PhD candidate wins IEEE Central Indiana Outstanding Student Award
Zhong Liu, a PhD student in Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has received the IEEE Central Indiana Section Outstanding Student Award, recognizing his research, leadership and service to the engineering community.
The award honors student members who demonstrate excellence in research, professional leadership, innovation and engagement with IEEE. Liu was selected for his academic and technical contributions, mentorship of fellow students and commitment to advancing engineering in Central Indiana.
Liu’s research focuses on helping make modern electric power grids more stable and reliable as renewable energy and power electronics play a growing role. In particular, he studies grid-forming inverters, devices that help renewable energy sources such as solar panels and battery systems interact reliably with the electric grid.
Liu’s work reflects the award’s emphasis on connecting strong academic research with practical applications. He also has contributed to a collaborative environment for students, helping support innovation and the development of the next generation of engineers.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition from IEEE Central Indiana,” Liu said. “Research is most meaningful when it can contribute to solving real engineering challenges, and I’m grateful for the mentors, colleagues and students who have supported and inspired me along the way.”
Liu is advised by Xiaonan Lu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Junjie Qin, assistant professor of electrical and computer Engineering.
