Purdue ECE student Cristian Barinaga named 2026 Astronaut Scholar
Cristian Barinaga, a student in Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named a 2026 Astronaut Scholar by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.
Barinaga, who is also a member of the John Martinson Honors College and a Stamps Scholar, will receive a scholarship of up to $15,000 for the 2026-27 academic year. The award also provides access to professional mentoring, networking opportunities and events designed to support students preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The Astronaut Scholarship is one of the nation’s most competitive awards for undergraduate STEM students. It is presented to juniors and seniors who demonstrate initiative, creativity and excellence in their fields and who intend to pursue research or advance their disciplines after completing their education.
Barinaga is among 79 students from 54 universities selected for the 2026 Astronaut Scholar class.
Despite its name, the scholarship is not limited to students studying aerospace engineering or planning to become astronauts. It recognizes promising students across a broad range of scientific, engineering, mathematics and technology disciplines.
As an Astronaut Scholar, Baringra is invited to attend an orientation weekend August 13-15 in Houston, TX, that includes a technical conference where students present their research. Astronaut Scholars also participate in professional and social events and attend the Innovators Gala, where the Neil Armstrong Award of Excellence is presented to an Astronaut Scholar alumnus.
Scholars may also be paired with mentors through the foundation’s professional network, helping them develop connections with experienced leaders in science, engineering and technology.
Through its scholarships and mentoring programs, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation supports students who have the potential to make significant contributions to their fields. Barinaga’s selection recognizes his academic accomplishments and places him among a national group of emerging STEM researchers and innovators.
