For the 21st time, College of Engineering staff members were recognized at the Staff Awards of Excellence celebration. College of Engineering Interim Dean Mark Lundstrom hosted the event. He says COE staff support students, faculty, research efforts, classroom management, and facilities.

“We owe our success to these talented individuals who advance our programs and initiatives, advise us, manage day-to-day operations and keep the College moving forward," Lundstrom said. "The College of Engineering has about 570 staff members. They represent 27 departments and work in over 45 different locations around campus. They bring a treasured mix of perspectives, experience and professional expertise.”

Mark Johnson, senior lecturer in the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was the recipient of the Leah H. Jamieson Leadership Award. The award is named after former COE Dean Leah H. Jamieson, who is currently the Ransburg Distinguished Professor of ECE. The purpose of this award is to recognize, encourage, and promote leadership contributions to the College of Engineering. Nominees are evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates initiative, innovation, and provides leadership within the department/school.
  • Encourages and motivates by example, the development of other staff members and serves as a mentor/resource person.
  • Promotes a welcoming and positive environment for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Johnson was selected for "encouraging and motivating others by example and his contributions with lasting impact within (the School of) Electrical and Computer Engineering and the College.” In 2018, Johnson received the Team Award along with the rest of the Bicentennial Torch Team. The multidisciplinary team designed and built the torch that was used during a run through all 92 Indiana counties and featured a camera that could take photos and video and upload them to the internet and GPS that allowed people to track the progress of the torch throughout the relay.
