Saurabh Bagchi, a professor in Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected as a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Bagchi was recognized for his work on security of distributed computing software systems, including mobile and embedded systems.

“It is a testament to the work done by so many students and staff in our research group that I have received this recognition,” Bagchi said. “I intend to use my IET Fellow status to accelerate the international collaboration in my research fields of security and applications of big data. The wide and unique international reach of IET should be an enabler in my effort.”

The IET, which is based in the United Kingdom, is one of the world’s largest engineering institutions with more than 147,000 engineering and technology professionals in 148 countries. It traces its foundation back to 1871. Currently, there are 7,730 IET Fellows comprising researchers and practicing engineers. The grade is highly selective and represents only 5% of the active members of IET.

IET Fellowship is awarded to individuals who have sustained high levels of achievement through leadership, senior responsibility, innovation and professional service, for example, and are at the forefront of engineering, technology or related disciplines relevant to the IET. Such achievement must have been sustained for a period of at least five years and usually within the last 10 years. It is based on a nomination and support letters from two renowned professionals, including at least one IET Fellow. It is then peer-reviewed and assessed by a panel of experienced IET Fellows.

Eugene H. Spafford, professor of computer science, where Bagchi holds a courtesy appointment, was one of Bagchi’s nominators.

“Purdue University is very fortunate to have a recognized research leader like Saurabh, especially given his track record and leadership in forging international collaborations for national and international-scale programs,” Spafford said. “I am very pleased he is being recognized by the IET for his efforts.”

Bagchi serves on the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors for the 2022-24 term and also is a Golden Core Member, Distinguished Visitor and Distinguished Contributor of the IEEE Computer Society. He is the director of the Center for Resilient Infrastructures, Systems, and Processes (CRISP) research center and the principal investigator for the Army Research Laboratory’s Army Artificial Intelligence Institute at Purdue. His research interests are in reliability and security of distributed computing systems.
