Allebach has been a member of the Purdue ECE faculty since 1983. Imaging has been a central theme of his research; and he has made many seminal contributions in the areas of printing and scanning, content repurposing, image quality, and image aesthetics. Algorithms developed in Allebach's laboratory have been licensed to major vendors of imaging products, and can be found in the drivers, firmware, and hardware (ASIC) of 100s of millions of units that have been sold world-wide. At Purdue, he has advised 89 graduated Ph.D. students and 26 graduated Masters thesis students. Allebach is a co-author on 114 published journal papers and 449 conference papers. He is a co-inventor on 56 issued U.S. Patents.

The Johann Gutenberg Prize is presented by IS&T under the sponsorship of Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in the U.S.
