Robert L. Gunshor, internationally known scientist and professor of 31 years at Purdue University, died on April 6, 2020 in Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, MA.  He was 84.

During his 31 year career at Purdue, Gunshor won 69 research grants, published 237 journal articles, and directed the research of 28 doctoral and 22 master’s degree students.  In his early career, he worked on microwave tubes, plasma waves, and Gunn devices.  Gunshor’s study on thin-film acoustic wave devices turned his interest to II-VI semiconductors, initially on a new class of materials known at the time as semi-magnetic semiconductors.  Working with molecular beam epitaxy, he established himself as one of the world’s leading authorities on II-VI compound semiconductors and led the research efforts to demonstrate one of the world’s first blue-green laser diodes.  Among his colleagues and numerous students, Gunshor was known as a dedicated, creative, and patient researcher with an undaunted spirit of exploration.

Gunshor was a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) and member of Sigma Xi.  In 1989 he was named Purdue’s Thomas Duncan Distinguished Professor of Microelectronics. In 1992 he won Purdue’s Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award.

Gunshor is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Barbara Ann (McFee), their three children and spouses, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memories and condolences can be shared here.
