Four ECE faculty win College of Engineering Faculty Excellence Awards

The annual Purdue College of Engineering Faculty Excellence Awards honor faculty who have been selected by their peers as the most outstanding in fields such as research, engagement, mentoring, and teaching. Four ECE professors received awards at the 2019 ceremony.

The Faculty Excellence Award for Graduate Student Mentorship was given to Prof. Saurabh Bagchi. The award recognizes faculty who demonstrate sustained and significant contributions to graduate student mentorship and education. Bagchi was chosen for his invaluable mentorship, which equips College of Engineering graduate students with the ethical foundation and technical and professional skills to achieve their full potential.

Prof. Stanley H. Chan was chosen for the Faculty Excellence Award for Early Career Teaching, which honors assistant professors for outstanding undergraduate teaching on the West Lafayette campus. Chan was recognized for the passion and enthusiasm with which he introduces students to probability and machine learning, and for his deep commitment to the professional development of students.

Two ECE professors were chosen for the Faculty Excellence Award for Research, which honors faculty for an exceptional recent research contribution that has had significant impact on the discipline and/or society. Prof. Pedro P. Irazoqui, who also serves as the interim head of ECE, was recognized for the development of the ioNode device, an ultra-miniature contact lens system that is poised to greatly improve treatment for people with glaucoma. Prof. Anand Raghunathan was chosen for recent field-defining research on approximate computing including the technique of trained quantization for deep neural networks, which is foundational to a new generation of artificial intelligence hardware.

Award winners were honored at the College of Engineering's 17th Faculty Awards of Excellence Dinner, which was held Friday, April 5, 2019 Shively Club | Ross-Ade Pavilion. The event also recognized all newly approved or ratified distinguished and named faculty. In ECE that included: Y. Charlie Hu, Michael and Katherine Birck Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Steven D. Pekarek, Edmund O. Schweitzer, III Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Dimitrios Peroulis Reilly Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
