Joerg Appenzeller, the Barry M. and Patricia L. Epstein Professor of ECE, is the recipient of the 2018 Aristotle Award from the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC). The award recognizes professors for outstanding teaching and a deep commitment to the educational experience of students.

“I have dedicated my entire research career since I joined the faculty at Purdue in 2007 to educating PhD students to become independent researchers,” says Appenzeller. “My credo has always been that ONLY excellence in research paired with the highest level of integrity and honesty will result in valuable scientific output. As I was told by Ken Hansen, the President and CEO of SRC, the support letters from my former students – most of whom are now working in the semiconductor industry – highlighted that sentiment. I am very proud about the fact that these values, that I deem critical, have made an impact and left a strong mark in the way these young scientists are thinking about their future careers.”

An awards committee made up of industry and academic participants review the nominations for the Aristotle Award based on four selection criteria: innovations in student advising, provision of learning experiences for students and deployment of statistical methodology, creation of an environment that encourages development in leadership skills, and student exposure to and interaction with industry.

The award will be formally presented to Appenzeller in September at TECHCON 2018 in Austin, Texas.

Purdue ECE faculty who have previously won the Aristotle Award include Kaushik Roy (2015) and Mark Lundstrom (2010).
