He received the award for his project titled "Busting Idle Anomalies on Android Wear". His group is examining operating system designs that make wearable devices such as smart watches more responsive during interaction.

This award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Professor Kulkarni will receive his award at a Washington, DC ceremony this spring.

The second place team, ACCESS, created a coding platform for beginner programmers and is a tool to be used by teachers and students to provide a better programming experience in entry level classes.
