Mr. John M. Miller, Director of the US Army Research Laboratory, has presented Professor Edward Delp and Professor William Chappell with the ARL Director's Coin as recognition for contributions made to ARL through their work on the project entitled “Standoff Inverse Analysis and Manipulation of Electronic Systems (SIAMES)” that was funded under the FY05 Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI).

Specifically, Mr. Miller recognized Professor Delp's contributions in the development of new approaches to waveform design and analysis contributing to optimal detection and classification of radio transceivers has great potential to improve the performance of the next generation of military sensor systems.

Also, Mr. Miller recognized Professor Chappell's contributions in expanding the scientific understanding of the root causes behind passive intermodulation distortion in passive components at microwave frequencies, and in developing strategies for controlling and cancelling this distortion using a simple magnetic field bias. Their contributions have the potential to substantially improve the performance of the next generation of military radio communications and sensor systems.

It is extremely rare for a commanding officer or installation director to present this symbol of praise to a private citizen.

The award was presented to Professor Chappell and Delp by Dr. Dev Palmer, the ARL program manager of the SIAMES project, at a ceremony on May 19 at Purdue that was hosted by the Associate Dean of Engineering for Research Melba Crawford and ECE Head Professor Ragu Balakrishnan.

SIAMES project involved NCSU (lead), UIUC, and Purdue.
