Professor Babak Ziaie has been invited to join the University of Southern California (USC) Biomimetic MicroElectronic Systems Engineering Research Center (BMES ERC) Scientific Advisory Board.

In October 2003, the National Science Foundation awarded the University of Southern California $17 million to create the Biomimetic MicroElectronic Systems Engineering Research Center (BMES ERC)— a Center dedicated to the coordination of groundbreaking research into the development of biomimetic devices.  The Center is committed to outreach and education as well as to the development of industry partnerships that will encourage the transfer of these technologies to the marketplace.

The mission of the BMES ERC is to further the science and engineering of novel biomimetic microelectronic systems. In these innovative systems, microelectronics are used to mimic and replace damaged and diseased systems in the human body. By communicating and interfacing directly with the central nervous system, these systems are designed to restore function for individuals suffering from presently incurable human diseases such as blindness, paralysis and memory loss.

Once damaged, the central nervous system does not heal itself. The vision of the BMES ERC is the development of safe and affordable biomimetic microelectronic systems that will allow the blind to see, animate paralyzed limbs and restore lost cognitive function.
