Desired Background/Needed Prior Knowledge for MSECE
Applicants for our MSECE are required to have a bachelor’s level degree in engineering or a scientific field such as math, computer science, or physics. We do not admit students with engineering technology degrees.
Additionally, our graduate-level courses do not teach foundational knowledge, so if your undergraduate degree is in an area of engineering other than electrical engineering or computer engineering, you may need to take some undergraduate coursework before applying. Note that undergraduate courses are not available online through Purdue and that taking these courses does not guarantee admission.
While coursework varies significantly depending upon your area of interest within ECE, the following are essential skills and knowledge for incoming students:
- 3 semesters of calculus and 1 semester each of differential equations and linear algebra (highly recommended)
- Python and C programming, MATLAB
For additional information on needed prior knowledge, see these sample plans of study.
Work experience: We do consider work experience when evaluating applications, but the student’s undergraduate background and academic performance is a major factor.
