Professional Master's Internships, Co-Op, & CPT

Students in the Professional Master's Program in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering are allowed to complete internships and co-ops, but must register for an Internship or Co-Op course, depending which type of position you secure, for the semester(s) during which you will complete one. This page outlines the requirements and process for participating in these opportunities.

Courses & Descriptions

ENGR 69699 Professional Practice Graduate Internship

Graduate internship experience. Program coordinated by the Office of Professional Practice with cooperation from academic disciplines and participating employers. Students submit technical report and company evaluation. Permission of Instructor required.

  • Credits: 0 credits, but appears on transcript as Satisfactory (S), or Unsatisfactory (U) submission of approved written report.
  • Type of Instruction: Experiential.
  • Semesters Offered: Summer, Fall, Spring semesters.
  • Required Approvals: Departmental and advisor approval is required. International students MUST also receive approval from International Students and Scholars.
  • Repeatable for Credit: Yes, this course may be repeated for credit.
  • Fees: Flat rate, $400
  • Grade: The course will be graded as “S” satisfactory, or “U” unsatisfactory based on the written report of the internship experience.
  • Pre-/Co-requisites: Master’s student standing or higher. Program approval required for registration.

ENGR 69199 Pro Prac Grad Co-Op I (for first semester of Co-Op) or ENGR 69299 Pro Prac Grad Co-Op II (for second semester of Co-Op)

​Graduate cooperative education experience. Program coordinated by the Office of Professional Practice with cooperation from academic disciplines and participating employers. Students submit technical report and company evaluation. 

  • Credits: 0 credits, but appears on transcript as Satisfactory (S), or Unsatisfactory (U) submission of approved written report.
  • Type of Instruction: Experiential.
  • Semesters Offered: Summer, Fall, Spring semesters.

Registration Requirements & Process

Requirements:

  1. Before your CPT will be approved, you must have:
    • completed one (1) semester in full-time status
      • International students must complete TWO semesters of full-time study.
    • a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  2. You will not be approved for CPT in a semester in which you are scheduled to graduate.
  3. F-1 International students are required to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) as well as register for the ENGR course(s). F-1 students must complete the ISS online CPT workshop and receive written employment authorization from ISS before beginning employment. Further information regarding CPT instructions, forms or processing times, please contact the ISS Office in Schleman Hall, Room 136.
  4. An offer letter from the company must be submitted when registering for the course. The letter must include:
    • title of the position
    • dates of employment (start and end dates)
    • mailing address, including zip code of the employment location
    • number of work hours per week
    • salary, and a brief description of the job duties and responsibilities

Process:

  1. Fill out the CPT Application Form (PDF) and submit to the ChE PMP Administrator for approval.
  2. If your CPT Application Form is approved, follow up with PMP Administrator to register for the appropriate course and follow up with the Office of Professional Practice to complete registration.
  3. International students must visit the International Student and Scholars website to learn more about Curricular Practical Training and submit a CPT application after attaining department approval to complete an internship or co-op.
  4. If your CPT request is approved by both the PMP and ISS, complete your internship or co-op as planned!
