Dr. Sohail Noor joined the Department of Neurological Surgery in February 2025 as a tenure-track assistant professor. He holds dual appointments at both the School of Medicine and IU Health. His research interests encompass neurophysiology, brain mapping, neural signal processing and neuromodulation mechanisms and technology. At IU Health, he is involved in intraoperative neurophysiology for brain mapping during deep brain stimulation surgeries. Dr. Noor's doctoral research at the University of Calgary focused on investigating the mechanisms of deep brain stimulation in both animal models and human patients, using electrophysiology and imaging. He conducted his postdoctoral research at Case Western Reserve University and Duke University, where he developed computational models to understand and localize field potentials recorded from Parkinson’s disease patients and investigated neural dynamics in response to selective brain stimulation in depression patients. Dr. Noor is dedicated to advancing neuroscience and particularly neuromodulation by addressing key challenges to improve the health of millions suffering from medication-resistant neurological disorders. He employs both invasive and non-invasive electrophysiology, anatomical and functional imaging, and computational modeling to achieve this goal. Passionate about educating the next generation of scientists, Dr. Noor aims to foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills among his students. With significant mentoring experience, he has supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate students from both neuroscience and engineering backgrounds. Dr. Noor's research has been published in respected journals such as PNAS, Brain Stimulation, and NeuroImage. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for various journals, including Brain Stimulation, Journal of Neural Engineering, and IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.
