Perspective

The Rundell research laboratory is devoted to developing effective quantitative approaches to design therapeutic and experimental strategies for the predictable manipulation of physiological and cellular processes in desired manners as well as refine the understanding of the underlying mechanisms. The research approach integrates mathematical modeling, systems analysis, and control theory directly with experiments on biological and physiological systems. The ultimate goal is to lead to a new era in tissue engineering, therapeutic design, and personalized medicine based upon validated quantitative approaches that combine theory with experiments, link the controls community with biomedical engineering, and advance mathematical and systems biology.

Received the NSF CAREER award for 2009 for the project entitled "CAREER: Advancing Model Predictive Control of Cell Differentiation"

Received a grant from the American Heart Association (AHA) for the project entitled "Evaluating the Efficacy of Rhythmic Abdominal Compression CPR"

Dr. Rundell's laboratory occupies roughly 1200 sq ft in the MJIS building with computational, cellular and physiological facilities:

  • Multiple servers provide access to various software packages including SAS, C++, MATLAB, and COMSOL
  • Access to a cluster of 10 Dell 1950 servers. Each server has 2 quad-core 3.0GHZ Intel Xeon processors and 16Gbytes of memory
