The Purdue Chapter of the Society of Sigma Xi has selected Professor Nicholas A. Peppas as the 2002
Faculty Research Award recipient to honor the tremendous impact his research has made on the
scientific community. The awards will be presented at the Sigma Xi banquet on April 18, 2002.

Professor Peppas, the Showalter Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, is an outstanding
researcher who has made significant contributions in several areas of polymer science and
pharmaceutical sciences. His pioneering work on diffusion in hydrogels and their applications in the
domain of controlled drug delivery has received international recognition. His most recent work on oral
insulin delivery will benefit a large number of diabetics by allowing patients to take their insulin in
smaller doses, more frequently, and without injection.

Professor Peppas has received numerous research and teaching awards, including ASEE's Senior
Research Award, Purdue's Herbert McCoy Award for highest research achievement, the J. Heller
Award for Best Research from the Controlled Release Society, and Purdue's Potter Award (three
times) for best engineering teacher.
