Cortland Johns, a PhD student in Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded a 2025–2026 STEM Chateaubriand Fellowship, a prestigious international scholarship funded by the Embassy of France in the United States. The award will support Johns as she travels to France to conduct part of her doctoral research in collaboration with a French research team.

The Bravo+ Award recognizes a stand-out accomplishment or over-the-top achievement of a Purdue faculty or staff member. The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering had four Bravo+ Award winners.

The Women’s Global Health Institute (WGHI) has announced its 2025 Pilot Grant recipients, awarding support to innovative projects that advance both translational and basic research in women’s health.

Chi Hwan Lee, the Leslie A. Geddes Professor of Biomedical Engineering has received a patent for a device that makes it easier to gently pick up and move fragile materials like thin tissues or tiny electronics.

Dr. Young Kim’s innovative research on non-invasive anemia detection continues to gain national attention—most recently featured by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

Louis Lee, a first-year biomedical engineering student at Purdue University in Indianapolis, received an honorable mention in the Spring 2025 Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Contest. This semester’s theme was “Dreams.”

Joey Wallace, Associate Vice President for Research and Development, Purdue University in Indianapolis and professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, was recently highlighted in the Researcher Spotlight series by Micro Photonics Inc., a leader in high-resolution imaging technologies.

The Weldon School is proud to celebrate Hazar Benan Unal, a postdoctoral research associate in Behzad Sharif’s group who has earned a Magna Cum Laude Merit Award from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). His abstract selected from over 10,000 global submissions was honored for its scientific impact and is a top 3 finalist for Best Overall Abstract in the Cardiac category at this year’s conference.

This award recognizes faculty who go above and beyond in mentoring honors students through their scholarly research projects—championing professional growth and fostering inclusive, collaborative research environments.

Alison Steele’s Purdue journey has already been spotlighted for her impressive co-op experience at DePuy Synthes and her study abroad and internship through the GEARE program — two experiences that helped her discover a passion for the medical device and orthopedics industries.
