BME Policies and Procedures

University Academic Notice (formerly Probation)

A student shall be placed on Academic Notice if their fall or spring semester or cumulative GPA at the end of any fall or spring semester is less than a 2.00. A student on Academic Notice shall be removed from that standing at the end of the first subsequent fall or spring semester in which they achieve semester and cumulative GPAs equal to or greater than 2.00. Further explanation of Academic Notice along with the Academic Separation (formerly Drop) policy can be found in the Purdue Catalog under Academic Regulations & Student Conduct.

BME Program Notice and Separation

BME students shall be placed on BME Program Notice if their BME graduation index at the end of any fall or spring semester is less than 2.00. A student on Program Notice shall be removed from that status at the end of the first subsequent semester in which they achieve a BME GPA equal to or greater than 2.00. Any grade change due to a reporting error will result in a recalculation of the BME index and determination of Notice status. This policy is in addition to but does not supersede Purdue University’s Academic Regulations. Thus, it is possible for a student to be in good standing with the university and also earn BME Program Notice.

The BME graduation index includes only the following courses: BME 201, 205, 206, 207, 214, 256, 290, 380, 389, 390, 48901, 490; CHM 116; CS 159; PHYS 241; MA 261; MA 262 (or both MA 265 and 266); BIOL 230; ME 200; STAT 511; BME depth area courses; or equivalents.

A candidate for a Biomedical Engineering (BME) baccalaureate degree earning a BME GPA below a 2.0 in the semester specified in the BME Program Notice Contract (but no later than the end of the third consecutive semester earning BME program notice) will be separated from the BME program, regardless of standing with Purdue University. Separated students will not be able to register for BME courses and will not receive a registration PIN from the BME academic advisors or have their CRF opened. In order to remain a Purdue University student, those affected must CODO to another program. Students may appeal the separation decision by submitting a written rationale to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee in MJIS 1021, no later than 30 days after the specified semester grades are posted on the student’s transcript.

CODO Students

Current Purdue students who wish to CODO into BME should review the BME CODO Requirements. These requirements can be found in the Purdue catalog.

Email Communication

Students who wish to communicate with the BME Academic Office or BME Academic Advisors must use their official Purdue email due to the confidential nature of the information discussed. Emails sent from external email services will not receive a response.

Graduation Requirements

The most up-to-date graduation information can be found in the Purdue Catalog.

All student must complete the Candidate for Graduation Application to indicate their intent to graduate. Students may apply to graduate up to three semesters (including summer) before their anticipated graduation. Students who fail to apply to graduate by the university deadline may be unable to graduate in their intended semester.

Pass/No Pass Option

Students may take any course at Purdue under the Pass/No Pass (P/NP) option. However, courses taken as P/NP will not count towards their degree requirements.

Overrides for BME Courses

Students should submit all override requests through Scheduling Assistant. Overrides will be approved in the order they are received when appropriate.

No overrides will be granted for non-BME students for BME lab courses. Overrides for non-BME students for BME core and depth courses will be considered on a case-by-case basis but will not be approved during batch registration.

Overrides for BME Co-Op and Internship Courses

The Co-op/Internship Coordinator approves student requests for the BME co-op and internship courses. Students who receive a co-op or internship offer must meet with Austin Glidden prior to receiving approval for their override request. Appointments for current BME students can be scheduled through Boiler Connect.

Overrides for Transfer Credits

Students who are taking coursework elsewhere to fulfill a pre-requisite for a BME course need to submit an override request. The requests will be deferred until the credit has posted to the student’s transcript or the student has submitted proof of completion of the course. Students can email a screenshot to the senior academic advisor to receive override approval and must include the following:

  • Course name & Title
  • Name of the institution
  • Final Grade

The senior academic advisor will verify that the course will transfer to Purdue as expected and approve the override request. If the course is not in the transfer credit database or it will not transfer to Purdue as excepted, the override request will be denied and the student will need to take the course at Purdue.

Overrides for T2M students

Current FYE students should attend the BME-FYE Registration Meeting in the spring to receive their registration PIN and have their CRF opened for the following fall semester. The BME advisors will not release registration PINs or open CRFs for students who are in their 4th semester in FYE or for students who are not eligible to participate in the T2M process in May. 4th semester students will need to wait until they are accepted into an engineering program to register for the following semester.

Students who are expecting to enter BME via the T2M process should register for all required non-BME coursework and submit overrides for the required BME courses.
