Study Abroad Student Testimonial

What were some of the most striking differences between being a student at Purdue versus NUIG?
One of the biggest differences is the way classes are scheduled at NUIG. Students in each major do not have options in what classes they take, their timetables are set. As a study abroad student I was able to choose a variety of classes, but that opportunity is not available to their full time students. Another major difference is the lack of homework and midterms in most classes. I think that is the most obvious difference. In one of my classes the only grade I received was for the final exam.

Why study abroad?
My mother and sister both studied abroad for a semester. My father travels all the time for business. My three closest friends and college roommates have all studied or traveled abroad in some capacity. I spent a summer in Germany in 2012. I have a burning desire and incessant need to travel. Even waiting for the plane to take off after spending 4 months away from home and missing my family and friends I turned to my mother and told her that I wasn't ready to leave. I think experiencing new cultures and trying different things help individuals to grow as people and discover more about themselves. Having this study abroad experience was important to me because it forced me to leave my comfort zone and have these amazing experiences, that let's face it, just aren't available in Indiana (as much as I love Purdue!). Ireland most definitely fulfilled my expectations!

Did your study abroad experience change your future plans?
My career path hasn't changed, in fact I was applying to graduate school while in Ireland. However, I would say that it confirmed my desire to involve travel with my future career.

Anything else you'd like to add?
Ireland is amazing, traveling is amazing! Everyone should travel even if it's just for a week. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn more about yourself and the world. Studying abroad has had a huge impact on my life and is something my college experience would not have been complete without.
