Feng Guo, PhD, Associate Professor of Intelligent Systems Engineering, Indiana University - Bloomington, will present "Organoids Meet AI and Medicine" on Wednesday, November 20th, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in DLR 131 as the final presentation in this semester's Seminar for Neurotrauma and Diseases seminar series.

Abstract: Human brain organoids are three-dimensional, brain-like tissues derived from human pluripotent stem cells that can replicate essential molecular, cellular, structural, and functional aspects of a human brain. These organoids hold remarkable potential for basic neuroscience, translational medicine, and artificial intelligence (AI). However, challenges remain in harnessing their full capabilities. Thus, my group has been exploring the intersection of organoids, AI, and medicine. In this talk, I will present our pioneering work on "organoid computing", a hybrid neuromorphic computing system that uses human brain organoids to tackle challenges in AI computing. Next, I will discuss our recent advancements in "organoid phenotyping", a novel approach for disease phenotyping through the use of organoid neural networks. Finally, I will introduce our progress in "organoid engineering", an innovative system designed to advance the standardization, scalability, and  quality of current organoid models.

Bio: r. Feng Guo is an Associate Professor of Intelligent Systems Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington (IUB). Before joining IUB in 2017, he received his Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State and his postdoc training at Stanford University School of Medicine. His group is developing intelligent medical systems with the support of multiple NIH and NSF awards. He is a recipient of the NIH Director's New Innovator Award, the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award at IU, the Early Career Award at Penn State, the Dean Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine, etc.

The seminar series is sponsored by the Purdue University Center for Paralysis Research and Plexon.
