Abstract: Neurotechnology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, with breakthroughs in neural interfaces, neuromodulation, and neuroprosthetics offering extraordinary opportunities to transform patient care. Yet translation from lab to clinic often stalls in the “valley of death” between discovery and application. This seminar will highlight lessons learned from two decades of building clinical programs in deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and cancer pain; leading translational research across neuromodulation and neuroprosthetics; and partnering with industry, professional societies, and federal agencies. From this perspective, Dr. Patil will share a vision of what Neurotech needs most from BME: seamless integration with clinical practice, creative and mutually beneficial models for industry collaboration, and bold, ethical engagement in human-centered trials and applications.

Biography: Dr. Parag Patil is an academic neurosurgeon, engineer, and translational innovator with over two decades of experience at the intersection of clinical neuroscience, engineering, and industry. He served as Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Anesthesiology, and Biomedical Engineering, and as Associate Chair for Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Michigan, where he built nationally recognized programs in neuromodulation and neurotechnology.

Dr. Patil also serves as Chief Medical Advisor for NeuroOne Medical Technologies Corporation, Vice President of the North American Neuromodulation Society, and Chair of NIH BRAIN Initiative study sections and special emphasis panels. Across these roles, he has helped advance the science and practice of restorative neuroengineering—guiding research from bench to bedside, mentoring students, trainees, and faculty, and helping to shape national funding priorities.
