Purdue University’s Board of Trustees on Friday (April 9) approved several Biomedical Engineering faculty promotions. The following promotions are effective with the 2021-22 academic year, effective Aug. 16, 2021, and also include Distinguished and Named Faculty approved by the board in November 2020.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program released its 2021 Award Offers and Honorable Mentions List on March 23, which includes a number of Purdue Engineering students and alumni.

Purdue University’s College of Engineering is not only among the largest but also among the very best in the country – rising even higher in national rankings. In recent years its graduate and research program ranking has been rising from No. 9 to 8 to 7.

Each spring, the College of Engineering recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of our graduate students and postdocs through several prestigious awards. Graduate students also select an outstanding faculty mentor who has gone above and beyond to serve the graduate students in their program.

Kelsey Macaddino, BME undergraduate student, is one of nine Purdue Engineering students who received the honor. She was also recognized in 2019 and 2020.

Purdue's Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student Association (BMEGSA) has selected Dr. Joseph Rispoli as the recipient of Outstanding Mentor of Engineering Graduate Students Award for the 2020-21 academic year.

Landing a faculty position is a competitive pursuit for freshly minted PhDs, requiring excellence in research, teaching, and service. Led by BME/ME’s C.H. Lee, a team of Purdue researchers developed a novel technology enabling commercial soft contact lenses to be a bioinstrumentation tool to help diagnose and monitor medical conditions.

Purdue University shattered last year’s attendance record during the virtual Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) Winter Retreat on Friday, February 26. More than 500 people registered for the conference, hosted by the Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. The theme of the event was, “Navigating the Regulatory Pathway for Medical Devices: A Conversation with the FDA, Clinicians, Researchers, and Industry Experts.”

A Purdue University neuroscientist’s findings suggest that the brain is not as efficient as we think.

To be efficient, it’s best to tailor efforts to the final goal. If devices or network connections can’t display or relay high-resolution images, there’s no point in streaming high-definition movies. A less fancy version not only will do, but it will stream faster without blocky artifacts.

In neuroscience, an indicator of the efficiency of relaying information is called sparse coding. Sparse coding means the brain relays (encodes) essential information with just a few (sparse) neurons.
