Medical devices are a nearly $500 billion global market and encompass technologies such as heart valves, joint replacements, medical imaging equipment, diagnostic tests, digital health technologies contained within smart watches, and thousands more. These are complex products that often take many years of development and testing before they are approved to treat patients. The rapid expansion of medical technologies has increased the demand for regulatory professionals who understand both the science of medical device development and the regulatory processes that are in place to protect and promote public health.

Rescue Biomedical has received a Fast-Track Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop its technology that detects when a person is overdosing on an opioid and delivers naloxone to reverse the action.

If you’ve been around BME during this past year, you may have heard about the EMBRIO Institute. Led by BME Head, David Umulis, EMBRIO is Emergent Mechanisms in Biology of Robustness, Integration, and Organization Institute. Funded in late 2021 as an NSF Biology Integration Institute, EMBRIO aims to determine how living systems integrate “orthogonal” signals such as chemical and mechanical stimuli to develop responsive phenotypes that coordinate cell and tissue structures for survival and function. We are employing quantitative imaging and simulation to bridge diverse biological systems to penetrate a Rules of Life question—"How are multimodal signals integrated across scales to coordinate the robust cell biological and morphogenetic responses needed to survive?”. EMBRIO’s interdisciplinary team is ideally positioned to penetrate these problems with expertise in modeling, simulation, experimental biology, and educational research. The answers to these questions have implications for human health and longevity.

This fall 24 first-year medical students embarked on their studies with the Indiana University School of Medicine here on the Purdue, West Lafayette, campus. This Purdue University, Indiana University School of Medicine partnership is more than 50 years strong, having been launched with a one-year pilot program in 1968. By 1980, a second year had been added, and by 2014, medical students could stay for all four years of their medical education, including clerkships at local hospitals.

The Purdue Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta, the national biomedical engineering honor society, presented their first annual 2022 Undergraduate BME Student Showcase on September 21. Underclassmen learned about the variety of opportunities available to BME students and how to get involved. Upperclassmen, graduate students, faculty, and staff were also invited to learn about the experiences and accomplishments of our talented undergraduate students.
