Craig Goergen, professor and associate head of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, has been selected as a 2026 Fulbright Scholar Alumni Ambassador — a distinction recognizing former Fulbright participants who promote international education and cultural exchange through outreach, mentorship and public engagement.

The prestigious cohort was selected as part of the Fulbright Program’s celebration of two historic milestones: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, commemorated nationally as “Freedom 250,” and the Fulbright Program’s 80th anniversary.

Fulbright U.S. Scholars chosen as Alumni Ambassadors represent a diverse group of institutions, disciplines and states, united by a commitment to strengthening communities and inspiring future generations through international collaboration. Ambassadors help expand awareness of Fulbright opportunities by sharing their experiences and advising prospective applicants. They also participate in conferences, presentations, webinars, podcasts and special initiatives across the country.

Goergen, whose research focuses on technologies and innovations that advance the study and treatment of cardiac disease, previously served as a 2022 Fulbright U.S. Scholar to France. During his exchange at Université de Montpellier, he investigated how mild traumatic brain injuries can influence long-term cardiac function.

Working alongside French collaborators, Goergen used advanced ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging techniques to study interactions between the brain and heart. His Fulbright experience expanded international research partnerships, led to multiple peer-reviewed publications and helped secure additional international grant support. Several trainees from his laboratory also completed international research experiences as a result of these trans-Atlantic collaborations.

“My Fulbright experience demonstrated how international collaboration can accelerate scientific discovery while also creating meaningful personal and professional connections,” said Goergen. “I am honored to serve as a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador and help encourage students, faculty and researchers to pursue opportunities that broaden their perspectives and strengthen global partnerships.”
