Six BME Faculty Members Recognized with Purdue Seeds for Success Acorn Awards
Presented by the Office of Research, the Seed for Success Acorn Awards recognize investigators who secure external sponsored awards of $1 million or more.
Congratulations to the following faculty members:

Bradley Duerstock, Professor of Engineering Practice, specializes in spinal cord injuries, assistive technology and accessible design. He received $1,502,238 from US Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity, for the project, “Universal Non-Invasive Detection of Autonomic Dysreflexia for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury.”

Craig Goergen, Associate Head for Clinical Engagement and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, specializes in cardiovascular mechanics. He received $1,235,883 from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, for a research project entitled, ”Modeling Mortality in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Cardiomyopathy: Identification of Surrogate Outcome Measures for DMD Drug Trials.”

Chi Hwan Lee.Professor of Biomedical Engineering and University Faculty Scholar, specializes in wearable devices and mechanics and materials for flexible/stretchable electronics. He received $1,803,433 from the Korea Institute for Advancement of “Technology Development of Electroceuticals for Functional Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury Using Biodegradable Semiconductor.”

Chien-Chi Lin, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, specializes in designing multifunctional polymeric biomaterials. He received $1,146,975 from the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases for a research project entitled,“Dynamic Double Network Hydrogel for Generating Pancreatic Organoids from Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells.”

Kevin Otto, Dane A Miller Head and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, specializes in neural engineering and microdevices for the brain. He received $1,949,463 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for a research project entitled, “Engineering the Neuronal Response to Electrical Microstimulation.”

Along with Pavlos Vlachos, Professor of Biomedical Engineering (courtesy) received an award of $2,606,200 from the National Cancer Institute for a research project entitled, “Engineering the Premetastic Niche.”

Along with Tamara Kinzer-Ursem, Marta E. Gross Professor of Biomedical Engineering, received an award of $2,431,252 for a research project entitled, “Stromal Targeting to Improve the Efficacy of Systemically Administered Drugs for Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinomas.”
