Hazar Benan Unal Earns Top MRI Research Honor at ISMRM 2025

The Weldon School is proud to celebrate Hazar Benan Unal, a postdoctoral research associate in Behzad Sharif’s group who has earned a Magna Cum Laude Merit Award from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). His abstract selected from over 10,000 global submissions was honored for its scientific impact and is a top 3 finalist for Best Overall Abstract in the Cardiac category at this year’s conference.

ISMRM’s 2025 annual meeting currently underway in Hawaii is the leading global conference for magnetic resonance research. With 10,452 abstracts submitted this year, only 7.6% were selected for oral presentation and just a handful received merit awards. Hazar Benan’s abstract represents the highest level of achievement among them.

This recognition not only highlights the groundbreaking contributions of Hazar Benan but also speaks to the strength of the research culture here at Purdue. His work is part of a larger effort led by Behzad Sharif. Whose group has earned four oral presentations at ISMRM this year alone; an impressive representation on the global stage.
