Goergen and Lee Named Purdue University Faculty Scholars

Craig Goergen, PhD, Professor of Biomedical Engineering
Chi Hwan Lee, PhD, Leslie Geddes Professor of Biomedical Engineering
Professors Craig Goergen and Chi Hwan Lee of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering have been named University Faculty Scholars, one of Purdue’s highest recognitions for mid-career faculty on an accelerated path toward academic distinction.

The University Faculty Scholars Program honors exceptional faculty who have earned national and international reputations for research, teaching, and service. Awardees demonstrate a compelling vision for future contributions with lasting impact in their fields.

Goergen has established a world-class program in cardiovascular imaging and device innovation at Purdue. His research in 4D cardiac ultrasound, photoacoustic imaging, and vascular biomechanics is advancing the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular disease. With support from NIH, NSF, the Gates Foundation, and others, Goergen’s work is improving imaging and device technologies for academic and clinical use. A dedicated educator, he developed and teaches courses in cardiovascular imaging and medical devices, including unique clinical observation opportunities for students. He is also deeply involved in outreach, international partnerships and professional service, most recently as a co-chair of the 2025 BMES Annual Meeting.

Lee, the Leslie A. Geddes Professor of Biomedical Engineering, is internationally known for his pioneering work in wearable electronics and flexible biomedical devices. His innovations—including sticker-like displays, smart contact lenses and nanoneedle sensors—are transforming chronic disease management and personalized medicine. His technologies are already making a real-world impact through commercial ventures and industry partnerships, including licensing agreements with Eli Lilly. Lee has developed interdisciplinary courses that serve students across engineering and health disciplines, and his mentorship has launched careers in academia and industry. His leadership in global collaborations, accessibility in education and service to the university community underscore his broad and meaningful influence.

Each University Faculty Scholar receives a five-year appointment and an annual allocation of $10,000 to support their scholarly endeavors. Please join us in congratulating Professors Goergen and Lee on this well-deserved recognition.
