The CSSAC Excellence Award consists of a plaque and a $1,500 honorarium. The award recognizes support staff members who demonstrate excellence in job performance, conduct, leadership and customer service.

Bruns, the Senior Research Shop Technician, was nominated by several faculty members for this award.

“One of Norvin's most notable achievements is his ability to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application,” shared Chi Hwan Lee, Leslie Geddes Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. “He has played a pivotal role in transforming complex engineering concepts into tangible prototypes, many of which have garnered international recognition through patents, publications and presentations. His technical expertise, coupled with a creative approach to problem-solving, has been instrumental in advancing our department's research initiatives.”

“Norvin’s ingenuity and manufacturing abilities know no limits. From designing camera mounting systems and helping fabricate custom elbow braces, Norvin can do it all,” said Craig Goergen, Leslie Geddes Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of Clinical Programs. “When my research group was given a mechanical tester from a collaborating university, Norvin reverse-engineered and brainstormed design changes to optimize workflow and increase efficiency. Norvin’s modifications made sample-loading 10-fold faster and compatible with a wider range of sizes. His creativity and tireless hard work have facilitated many award-winning senior design projects. His numerous patents and acknowledgments in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations are a testament to his fervent support of the department.”

“Norvin leads by example, serving as a mentor to students and guiding them through the complexities of senior design projects,” said Nan Kong, professor and interim Dane A. Miller department head. “His patience and expertise empower students to excel, instilling in them a passion for biomedical engineering and a commitment to excellence. Beyond senior design, Norvin extends his mentorship to sophomores and juniors, providing them with foundational knowledge essential for their academic and professional success. His unique style, characterized by accessibility and humor, fosters an environment where students feel supported and motivated to learn.”

Bruns’ is affectionally known as “Uncle Norv.” His impact extends beyond the classroom, as evidenced by the lasting relationships he builds with students.
