Emboa Medical wins first place in Purdue Innovates Incubator New Venture Challenge

Sergio Ruiz and Angel Enriquez won the Purdue Innovates competition.
Emboa Medical won first place and $10,000 in the Purdue Innovates Incubator New Venture Challenge for developing a novel blood clot extraction device to improve patient outcomes after strokes.

Emboa Medical started as a side project with graduate student Angel Enriquez, professor Hugh Lee, Daniel Sahlein, MD, an interventional neuroradiologist at Goodman Campbell and Peter Kim Nelson, MD, a neurointerventional radiologist with NYU Langone.

Enríquez graduated with his PhD in May 2023. He had many options but decided to stay at Purdue and follow through with Emboa Medical – taking a risk and seeing where it could go.

“As a biomedical engineer you hope your research can positively impact human health,” said Enríquez.

The Emboa Medical team includes Sergio Ruiz, who assists with academic research to understand the mechanism and performance of the biomimetic insert that can capture the blood clot better.

The New Venture Challenge (NVC) helps prepare Purdue student startups for market entry and fundraising. A three-workshop series, NVC helps participants craft a solid value proposition, develop their go-to-market strategy, build a compelling finance model for investors and more.

At the end of the program, each team put together a pitch deck and pitched to investors at the annual Purdue Innovates Startup and Technology Expo.

Emboa Medical also won the Crowd Favorite prize and an additional $1,000.

Purdue Innovates’ entrepreneurial ecosystem helped establish 16 companies based on Purdue research, which includes Emboa Medical.

“Emboa Medical is finalizing the prototype development stage and gearing toward a pivotal preclinical animal study with a works-like/looks-like prototype of our patent-pending catheter. The $11,000 prize will be used toward efforts in the manufacturing and design optimization of our device,” Enríquez said. “The New Venture Challenge and the Purdue Innovates workshops have provided Emboa with a solid foundation. After participating in the Firestarter and Market Readiness programs, our company felt prepared to showcase our technology and deliver a strong pitch. We are grateful and appreciative of the community Purdue Innovates has created to support its startups.”

Earlier this year, Emboa Medical won a first-place prize from MedTech Color’s 4th Annual MedTech Color Pitch Competition.
