Professor James Leary Recipient of International Journal of Nanomedicine Distinguished Career Award

Dr. James Leary, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and SVM Professor of Nanomedicine, was selected to receive the International Journal of Nanomedicine Distinguished Career Award at the recent Annual Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society, held in Hartford, Connecticut.

The International Journal of Nanomedicine is an international, peer-reviewed journal focusing on the application of nanotechnology in diagnostics, therapeutics, and drug delivery systems throughout the biomedical field. Reflecting the growing activity in this emerging specialty, the aim of this journal is to highlight research and development leading to potential clinical applications in the prevention and treatment of disease.

Dr. Leary came to Purdue in July, 2005 as Professor of Basic Medical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering. He is also a member of Birck Nanotechnology Center, Bindley Biosciences Center, and the Oncological Sciences Center. His laboratories are housed in the Bindley Biosciences Center and Birck Nanotechnology Center of Discovery Park. His Veterinary School interests include further development of nanomedicine through comparative medicine research for eventual human clinical applications.

For the previous 10 years he was Professor of Internal Medicine, Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, Biophysics, and Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas as well as Assistant Director of the Biomedical Engineering Center and a member of the Molecular Sciences, Structural Biology, Vaccine, and Cancer Centers there. Prior to that Dr. Leary was a faculty member for 16 years at the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester, New York.

At Purdue Dr. Leary is in the process of building new highly interdisciplinary research programs in nanomedicine, regenerative medicine, cancer diagnostics and therapeutics, high-throughput technologies, and drug discovery.
