Not long after being named by his colleagues for the CT Sun Research Award, Purdue AAE professor Jon Poggie received another research accolade: He was selected as a University Faculty Scholar (UFS) for 2023 through 2028.

Recipients of this award receive an annual grant of $10,000 each year of the term, to enhance and advance their programs. For Poggie, that means deeper research into computer simulation of hypersonic flight and aerodynamic heating.

Poggie plans to use his funding to pursue new research paths, for travel, and for other research expenses that are not typically covered by grants. Some will serve as seed funding for a new project, in collaboration with the FORCES Initiations in the College of Liberal Arts, on military simulations using fluid-like models.

“I am honored to receive this recognition from the university, and grateful for the annual grant of discretionary funds. They will enable me to pursue new and unconventional ideas, which I hope to grow into large, successful research projects,” he says.

Poggie is among five faculty members in the College of Engineering selected for the UFS program in 2023. The program recognizes outstanding faculty at the West Lafayette campus who are on an accelerated path for academic distinction. These individuals are selected by the Engineering Named Professorship Committee for their exceptional accomplishments and scholarly impacts.

Other AAE faculty currently in their 5-year term as University Faculty Scholars are: Jim Garrison and Michael Sangid (2022-2027); and Timothée Pourpoint (2020-2025)
