"Engineering has provided an opportunity for me to learn and contribute throughout my career, to provide guidance for engineers and students, and to positively impact the environment through clean diesel technology. Probably my greatest assets that I attribute to Purdue are a good work ethic tied to integrity, the desire and skills to continually learn, and a tenacity to solve many technical challenges."

Wayne Eckerle received his BSAAE and MSAAE from Purdue in 1975 and 1976, respectively, and a PhD in fluid mechanics from the University of Connecticut in 1985. He is currently the vice president of Corporate Research and Technology at Cummins, Inc., in Columbus, Indiana. Since joining Cummins in 1989, Eckerle has held leadership positions in metrology, quality, fuel systems technology, thermal and fluid sciences, and advanced engineering. Prior to his time at Cummins, he worked at UTRC for 10 years and was also an associate professor at Clarkson University.

Eckerle is the recipient of the Cummins J. Irwin Miller Award of Excellence. He serves as treasurer of The Arc of Bartholomew County. He is head of the Research Subcommittee of the IUPUI Dean's Industrial Advisory Board, a member of the Florida State/A&M COE Dean's Industrial Advisory Board, and head of the Florida State/A&M COE IME Advisory Council.
