MSE 581 Enrollment Application

**IMPORTANT** Purdue University and the School of Materials Engineering is implementing changes to the SEM training model on campus. You should now apply for SEM training through the MSE iLAB Core.

This course combines MSE 581 and MSE 583. The application below applies for both current and future offerings of the class:

  • MSE 581 courses run throughout the year. NOTE: MSE 581 offers only one for-credit session at the beginning of each semester (1 pass/fail credit). Additional sessions will take place on an as-needed basis and will still serve as the Purdue SEM qualification/training, but will not be for credit.

Due to limitations in existing facilities, the enrollment in MSE 581 must be maintained within a strict cap each semester. Enrollment is by instructor approval only. Students interested in enrolling in MSE 581 must submit the on-line application before the start of the semester for which they wish to register for MSE 581.

Class will consist of video lectures and instructor-led and independent lab training. All lab times will be arranged via email prior to the start of the session. Class consists of 3 labs, 3 quizzes covering 9 video lectures, and a final independent SEM operation test ('driving test'). ‘Driving Test’ images are due the final week of class. 100% attendance and passing quizzes are required to pass the course. Material in the 1-credit P/F section of 581 is identical to the 0-credit 'training sessions'.

Please note that there is a lab fee (~$150) associated with instrument use during lab. Also students will need to have Coral access for the final image test.
