MSE Courtesy Faculty, Chi Hwan Lee, 'lights up' wearable with high-tech embroidery solution

A Purdue University research team led by BME faculty (and MSE courtesy faculty) Chi Hwan Lee, including MSE PhD student Taehoo Chang, have flipped the lights on with light-emitting textiles. In the past, machine embroidery with customized designs and patterns compromised the integrity of the electroluminescent (EL) threads. Lee's research team have overcome that by developing multicolor electroluminescent threads in blue, green, and yellow for use with standard embroidery machines. These fabrics can produce vibrant lighting effects in sectors like fashion, healthcare and safety wearables and advertising displays.
