Mike Titus and Janelle Wharry receive TMS 2018 SMD Young Leaders Professional Development awards

Assistant Professors, Mike Titus and courtesy appointment Janelle Wharry, each received a 2018 SMD Young Leaders Professional Development award.
Michael Titus, Assistant Professor of Materials Engineering

I am extremely grateful for this recognition, especially because it comes from my professional society home. TMS and the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition provide me with significant networking, engagement, and scholarly opportunities, and the two have enabled numerous successful collaborations throughout the years. Furthermore, the comprehensive symposia offered at the TMS Annual Meetings & Exhibitions and other TMS-sponsored events have provided me with many opportunities to share my research with academics, researchers, and industry members. I look forward to further engagement in TMS and SMD-related activities that are enabled by this award.

Janelle Wharry, Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering

TMS meetings feature the most comprehensive programming in my research field (nuclear and irradiated materials), along with extensive programming in related, but broader fields, such as metallurgy, nanomaterials, and characterization. This enables me and my students to learn about the most recent research advances that crosscut materials science, then subsequently extend and apply these advances to our nuclear/irradiated materials niche. TMS meetings have also helped me build stronger relationships with colleagues, meet potential collaborators, and cultivate friendships. At each TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition I’ve attended since I was a student, my enjoyment of the conference has increased as my involvement has increased.
