ABSTRACT

Chalcopyrite CuInSe2 (CIS) based solar cells have generated noteworthy attention due to their unique optoelectronic properties such as direct band gap, low raw material utilization, and tunable band gap, which makes them suitable for tandem solar cell applications and obtain a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE). This review article is focused on the main characteristics of this absorber layer, its synthesis by solution processing techniques, and additionally, the strategies that have been implemented to promote high-quality grain growth, the decreased carbon content of the final film, and the enhancement of the electrical parameters of the solar cell. Additionally, the sodium fluoride bottom layer is proposed as a grain growth assistant during the selenization step in the solar cell fabrication.
