Dr. David Field—Professor and Director of the Institute of Materials Research at Washington State University

Abstract: Much attention has been given to designing gradient microstructures in metals and alloys in order to achieve desired mechanical properties, with increased strength and retained elongation being the primary focus. These structures can be achieved through modern advanced manufacturing, including solid state forming as well as additive processing. This work focuses upon the quantitative description of microstructural gradients and its application to specific structures. Solid state forming of metals and wire-arc additive manufacturing of multi-metal steel structures are highlighted in the discussion.

Biography: David Field is Professor and Director of the Institute of Materials Research at Washington State University. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 1991 from Yale University. From 1990 to 2000 he was employed as Sr. Engineer at Alcoa Technical Center and as Director of Technology at TexSEM Laboratories. He joined the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University in August, 2000. He was Director of the Joint Center for Deployment and Research in Earth Abundant Materials (JCDREAM) from 2016-19 and continues on the Board of Directors for JCDREAM. He is the author or co-author of about 200 technical articles and has given more than 100 invited presentations at national or international meetings, universities, and national laboratories. He is the current Editor-in-Chief of Materials Characterization and is a fellow of ASM International and the Washington State Academy of Sciences.
