James W. Barany - A Purdue Legacy 1930-2011

We are extremely sad to announce that Dr. James W. Barany, Professor Emeritus of Industrial Engineering, passed away Monday night, November 7, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. With his passing, the School of Industrial Engineering, the College of Engineering, and Purdue University have lost one of the most respected and beloved members of our family. Seemingly from the day he arrived at Purdue in 1958 through the last seven decades, Dr. Barany has been the heart and soul of Purdue IE and he will be sorely missed.

IE students receive the 2011 SIGM Dean's Award

Two IE seniors, Mayank Garg and Daniel Huerta, received the 2011 SIGM Dean's Award last month. The award was given to the top few students from a participant pool of 125.

Bradley Duerstock named Associate Professor of Engineering Practice

Dr. Bradley Duerstock is now an Associate Professor of Engineering Practice in BME and IE. In this position, Dr. Duerstock will apply his unique practical experience with assistive technology (AT) to engage and collaborate with students, staff members, and faculty members in the development of AT. AT relates to any equipment or process that provides persons with disabilities greater access to or independence in their daily lives and performing educational, occupational, or healthcare-related activities.

Professor Nakano gave a lecture on "Sustainable Manufacturing: Past and Future Trends in Japan"

In his lecture, Professor Masaru Nakano provided a definition and approaches of sustainable manufacturing and described past efforts and challenges related to ecological manufacturing in Japan, as well as the strategic technology roadmap developed since 2005. The efforts include issues such as environmental pollution, energy, material, and global warming, along with ecological technology and policy. In addition, he introduced studies on sustainable manufacturing for green society with clean energy vehicles as a research example in the SDM.

IE student awarded for outstanding service

The School of Industrial Engineering congratulates Martin Yi Zhang who has been selected by the College of Engineering to receive an Outstanding Service Scholarship of $2,000 in recognition of his contributions to the school, college, and university.
