GLOBAL ENGINEERING EXPERIENCES (GEE)

Choose 2-3 from the options below

You can participate in these experiences at many points throughout your career, we even offer some pre-freshmen STEP-Abroad programs. However, some experiences like the LEAPs require you to talk to you advisor and start planning ahead of time to make sure it fits your plan of studies.

LONG-TERM ENGINEERING ABROAD PROGRAM (LEAP)

One academic semester of Purdue-approved study abroad program during with six (6) or more credits of engineering-related coursework at a strategic global university partner. You need a grade of "C" or better in all courses that are counted toward the minor.

Most students complete their LEAP during the second semester of their junior year.

SHORT-TERM ENGINEERING ABROAD PROGRAM (STEP-Abroad)

Any short-term study abroad experience offered by the College of Engineering, typically occurring during winter break, spring break, or Maymester. The program must involve enrollment in three (3) or more engineering credits.

These programs are available at most levels (pre-freshmen to senior). It depends on each program.

SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN GLOBAL ENGINEERING (SURGE)

See program’s page for current SURGE offerings. The duration of these programs is usually two (2) or more months and they take place at strategic university partners worldwide.

Applications are usually received during the Fall semester the year before the SURGE experience.

INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP

An international internship at a strategic global industry partner or under the auspices of a global organization, of duration two or more months.

This type of experience will have to be pre-approved by GEPP and will require your supervisor to fill out one midterm and one final report during the internship.

See midterm report template.
See final report template.

NOTE: GEARE international internships may count towards this requirement if you are a student who completed this experience, but not the GEARE program.

INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING DESIGN PROJECT

Successful participation in at least two (2) credits of project-based work with a global partner or focus. The key objective is to enable and recognize the intense, personal experience of working with students and/or professionals from a different culture over an extended period of time on a project where the global context of the work is essential. As part of the global project work, students must submit a written technical report and/or give an oral presentation.

Most students will meet this requirement through participation in Global Design Teams (GEP 10000-GEP 40000), global EPICS (EPCS 10100-EPCS 41200), or a senior capstone project.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Demonstrate proficiency in a second language up to the 202-course level in at least one non-native language. The 12 credit-hour requirement includes credits established by examination. This requirement will normally be completed before you participate in study or professional practice experiences abroad.

Note: a total of 3 credit-hours of language must be taken at the Purdue-WL campus.

CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE

Demonstrate proficiency in an understanding of cultures by completing 12 credits of coursework in culture-oriented courses. A total of 6 credit-hours can include credits established by examination.
