Summer 2025 Registration

Summer 2025 registration season has begun.  Time tickets have opened for most students. Your time ticket is in myPurdue>Register for Classes card>Registration Status & Time Ticket. The full summer Schedule of Classes is also in your myPurdue portal. Online classes are incredibly popular with undergraduate students.  Students can view the full list of online courses on the Think Summer website.

Students manually schedule themselves in the Scheduling Assistant for summer session instead of completing a course request form (CRF) and being enrolled later. Unsure what this means? Follow this step-by-step video.

The summer PIN will be needed and it is the same as the spring PIN that you received for Spring 2025. Students are welcome to make an appointment with their primary advisor in BoilerConnect if they are unsure what courses to take.  Students are NOT required to do EEE mentoring for summer registration.

Other Summer 2025 info:

BIOL 28600 was recently added to the summer schedule and the course is already nearing full capacity. If you need this course in summer, enroll quickly.

Advisor-Initiated Scholarship – Advisors can nominate up to three students who would benefit from summer courses to be considered for a scholarship of up to $500.  The advisor deadline to nominate is February 28. Preference is given to first-year and second-year students who need to catch up on degree requirements.  Reach out to your EEE advisor (Tammi Thayer or Maeve Brewer) if you are interested in this nomination.

Summer Stay – Selected students can earn up to $2,500 in exchange for completing a 140-hour research or internship experience alongside 9 credit hours. Research and internship credits count. This opportunity is very competitive. The priority deadline to apply is February 28 and the final deadline is March 28.

Summer Internship Plus – Selected students earn up to $1,000 for completing an off-campus internship alongside 6+ credit hours of online or on-campus coursework. Internship credits count. The priority deadline to apply is February 28 and the final deadline is March 28.

Summer Finish Scholarship – Selected students earn up to $500 for graduating in August instead of waiting until December. The priority deadline to apply is February 28 and the final deadline is March 28.

Summer Double Major, Summer Minors, Undergraduate Certificate, and Co-op Scholarships – Selected students can earn up to $1,000 for completing 6+ credit hours of online or on-campus coursework. The priority deadline to apply is February 28 and the final deadline is March 28.

Summer Financial Aid – All students interested in receiving summer financial aid need to complete the Summer Aid Application. The Summer Aid Application will be available in a student's myPurdue account under the Financial Tab beginning in March. Initial summer financial aid notifications will begin in May.  If an application is submitted after this time, it will take 1-2 weeks to receive a Financial Aid award notification from that submission date.  All updates are available and viewable on myPurdue. More information is available on the Summer Aid website.

Summer Housing – Undergraduate students who are in need of summer housing and are registered for at least one course can find more information on the Summer Housing. Students completing non-credit internship or research experiences should visit the Summer Intern Housing website.

EEE Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE

This section is prepared for the newsletter by Ms. Margaret Whelton, PE.  She is the EEE Manager of Industrial Experience.  The responsibilities of this position include working with industry to secure internships, co-ops, and full time job opportunities for students; developing real world senior design and research projects; and facilitating partnerships between industry and Environmental and Ecological Engineering. She has twelve years of experience as a practicing environmental engineer prior to becoming part of EEE.  She is a registered professional engineer in Indiana, Virginia, and Alabama.

The 2025 Co-op Days Recruiting Event (career fair) is Tuesday, January 28th. It will be held in the PMU North and South Ballrooms from 10am to 4pm.  All five companies listed under EEE (on the Career Fair Plus App) have options for co-ops, internships, and fulltime positions.  If you’re looking for a job, I highly suggest you review the career fair in the app and attend if possible.  It is a smaller fair so you should be able visit companies quicker.

As usual, don’t forget to look outside the EEE list for other companies that interest you.  Looking quickly, American Structurepoint and Kimley Horn are consulting companies on the CE list that have hired EEEs for both fulltime and internship opportunities. If you’re interested in a company, visit their booth.

Have you thought about co-op?  It is a great way to gain substantial experience as a student. For co-ops, only freshman and sophomores are applicable.

Expo is Tuesday, February 4th and 5th and will be hybrid (virtual and in person).  In person will be on February 4th at the CoRec from 8am-3pm.  Virtual will be on February 5th from 10am-4pm. Virtual includes five options currently for EEEs-two of which are with university academic programs, which is new.  Companies who attend in person usually don’t attend virtual and most of the companies are in person, so be sure to attend on Feb 4th if possible.  Both career days will be using the career fair plus app (like IR did in the fall) and company information is up!   There are 39 companies listed as interested in EEE for the in person fair on February 4th

Expo is the largest Purdue career fair in the spring semester.  Remember that usually there are some companies that have listed EEE as an option, but there are also good companies that don’t have EEE selected.  To enhance your job search, look for companies seeking Environmental Health Sciences and Civil Engineering and see if they do environmental work.  Many do!  I will send out an email closer to the event with more details.

There is also a Prep Night to help you prepare for EXPO on January 30th from 6-9pm in the Stewart Center where they give you the opportunity to practice your interview skills and elevator pitch, among other things.  There is even a specific workshop offered by Jacob Moeckler to talk about the tips and skills needed during the job search.  Find out more about the Prep Night offerings here

They are currently working on the in-person seminars schedule for EXPO.  They will be February 3rd from 3:30-8:30pm.  I’ll send out more information in an email closer to the fair.

LEED Training Webinar Dates

EEE students should understand that LEED is one professional certification. Earning a PE license in engineering requires considerably more education, knowledge and experience, and all EEE graduates are qualified to eventually earn a PE license, which is significantly more valuable. On occasion, an EEE student will ask about LEED. LEED is more within the domain of the Arch Engr group within Civil. The LEED Green Associate (GA) credential is the only entry level sustainability designation and shows employers and clients that you have certified knowledge in the green building industry. Most people can take a short course and pass the LEED certification test. As a courtesy, the following info is being provided. It is not required or necessarily endorsed.

NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (or REUs) are competitive summer research programs in the United States for undergraduates studying science, engineering, or mathematics. Such programs usually focus on targeting women and underrepresented minorities.  The programs are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, and are hosted in various universities. They are among the most prestigious summer programs that an undergraduate can participate in. Individual REUs tend to be specialized in a particular field of science. There are REUs in many scientific fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, biology, psychology, and computer science.

REU sites typically consist of ten undergraduates working in the research program of the host institution.  As the program is funded by the NSF, undergraduates must be citizens or permanent residents of the US or its possessions to be eligible for funding. However, some REU sites accept "self-funder" international students. Applications are typically due between February and March.  This is excellent opportunity for undergraduates to get further research experience, and REUs are especially recommended for students considering graduate coursework later on.  Compensation for hours worked is provided.

A searchable engine and more info can be found at http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.jsp

These opportunities are competitive so having prior research experience makes you more competitive.

See your EEE Mentor for more insights on the advantages of REUs, or with help in narrowing your choices.
