Many of you have gone to career fairs this semester and are now preparing for interviews.  Purdue Human Resources is offering an info session on preparing for the job interview.  It will be help via in person (Young 268) or teams on November 15yh from 2 to 3pm. HOLDs: Action Required by EVERY Student in MyPurdue Portal

It is time for your annual review of your Financial Obligations Statement and Emergency Contact Information.  Please take a few minutes to review and complete both of these important tasks in order to avoid issues with your upcoming Spring 2023 registration. 

  • Action needed – Affirmance of Financial Obligations:

Review and update your annual agreement by visiting the Bills & Payments page via mypurdue.purdue.edu and click the link “Affirmance of Financial Obligations” found within the Student Account section.  Doing so will automatically release the hold on your account.  Lack of compliance will result in your inability to register for classes, including the ability to drop or add courses. Click here for further instructions. 

  • Action needed – Emergency Contact:
Add or validate an existing emergency contact by visiting the Academics page via www.mypurdue.purdue.edu and click the link “Emergency Contacts” found within the Personal Information section.  Doing so will automatically release the hold on your account.  Lack of compliance will result in your inability to register for classes, including the ability to drop or add courses.  If an emergency contact exists, you must click the Verify/Submit Changes button at the bottom of the page even if there are no changes made.  This will trigger the automatic release of the hold. Click here for further instructions. 

Additionally, there is an opportunity for you to provide your cell phone number in order to receive text messages from your academic advisor, Office of the Registrar and Student Success Programs.  You can access this option at www.mypurdue.purdue.edu.  Click on the Academics page and look under the Personal Information section.


Academic Success Center (ASC) Workshops

The Academic Success Center is hosting various workshops to help students create a plan for finals week and to even learn new studying tactics. The November workshops are below: 

  1. Practice Your Pomo on Wednesday, November 9 from 7pm to 11pm. Flyer

This is a drop-in, study event for students to put a new technique to practice. This popular time management method will be led by ASC Student Leaders. During the breaks students can get up and stretch, chat with peers, grab a snack, and participate in pop culture trivia!

  1. Create Your Finals Game Plan on Thursday, November 17 at 7pm AND Wednesday, November 30 at 6pm. Flyer

CE59700AE: Environmental Fluid Mechanics (Prof. Troy)

Prof. Cary Troy will be teaching CE 59700AE: Environmental Fluid Mechanics in Spring 2023.  It is assumed this is the “same” course or same content as CE 44300, converted to be taught at the graduate level.  Junior level or above required.  CE 44300 is on the EEE Selective  – Category C list.  EEE will use CE 59700AE as EEE Selective – Category C. 


ME 49601CC: Climate Change and Renewable Energy Spring 2023

This new course will be taught by Prof. Shubhra Bansal. EEE students with junior or senior standing are welcome.  A course description is at https://purdueme.com/2022/09/16/me-49601-renewable-energy-technologies/.  If you are  interested in this course please add it or prioritize it on your spring CRF entry.

EEE will count this course as EEE Selective or Technical Elective credit, whichever is most useful to the student.

Free New York Times Subscription

Purdue University offers a free New York Times subscription for all faculty and students. All you must do to access your free subscription is to sign up at www.nytimes.com/purdue. This free subscription gives access to ALL New York Times articles, as well as the entirety of their archives. See attached flyer.


AWWA Membership Opportunity

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) is the largest organization for water professionals and offers a vast number of educational and networking opportunities for all members, students included. AWWA has programs and resources designed to help them lay the foundation for a successful career in water. Student’s have access to published articles, opportunities to present research at conferences, scholarship opportunities, and networking with peers and other water professionals.

From now until the end of December, any student who joins can get their first year of membership for $10.  Find info here.


First Gen Event

Come celebrate the assets and strengths embodies by first-generation college students during “Proud to be First!” on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022. The reception will be from 4:30-6 PM in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union. Flyer attached.  Proud to be First! Is intended to build community among first-generation students, as well as staff, faculty, alum and advocates.

IU Maurer School of Law Session

Are you interested in Law School? Look into the Insider’s Guide to Law School Admissions presented by Janet L. Hein, the Director of Admissions at Indiana University, Maurer School of Law. Get application advice from an expert and learn more about Indiana Law! The information session will be on Thursday, November 10th from 5 to 6 PM in ARMS 1028. Flyer attached.


Boilermaker Support Network (BSN) Callout

The Boilermaker Support Network (BSN) is a registered student organization at Purdue that provides peer-to-peer facilitated support groups led by trained student leaders, as well as monthly social outreach events for all students. The support groups are offered multiple times throughout the week and provide a welcoming space to discuss mental wellbeing and the stressors associated with being a student, family member, friend and/or peer. Students looking for a comfortable place in finding a supportive community on campus, BSN would be suited for you!

SURF Nuts and Bolts

Engineering Undergraduate Research Office (EURO) at Purdue University will organize the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program in the Summer of 2023. It is a 10-week-long paid research opportunity for undergraduates enrolled in US universities.

To help you prepare a stronger application for the SURF 2023, we are hosting the "SURF Nuts and Bolts" event. Flyer attached. As part of the event, two sessions will be organized at the end of November. The in-person session will be held on 29th November, and the Virtual session will be held on 30th November (Zoom Link). Purdue Student Sustainability Council (PSSC) Networking Event

The PSSC is hosting a sustainability networking event Wednesday, November 9th in GRIS 103 from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. There will be company representatives speaking about their background, company, and student opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to speak to the representatives and give their resumes. 2023 DOE Scholars Program

The DOE Scholars Program is designed to attract talented undergraduate and graduate students, and recent graduates to research, technical and professional opportunities within U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and organizations that support the DOE mission. Check out the DOE Flyer.

Benefits

1.    Stipends
Undergraduate students: $700/week
Graduate students and postgraduates: $750/week
2.    Inbound/Outbound Travel: Up to $1,000 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site.
3.    Other allowances: Depending on your project assignment, duration of appointment and funding availability, you may be eligible to receive an allowance for travel and training to promote the educational goals of your appointment.

 

Eligibility

1.    Be a U.S. citizen
2.    Be an undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate of an accredited institution of higher education majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related areas.
3.    Must be pursuing a degree or have received a degree within 5 years of their starting date in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or have demonstrated interest or experience in a STEM field that supports the DOE mission.
