Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE

This section is prepared for the newsletter by Ms. Margaret Whelton, PE.  She is the EEE Manager of Industrial Experience.  The responsibilities of this position include working with industry to secure internships, co-ops, and full time job opportunities for students; developing real world senior design and research projects; and facilitating partnerships between industry and Environmental and Ecological Engineering. She has twelve years of experience as a practicing environmental engineer prior to becoming part of EEE.  She is a registered professional engineer in Indiana, Virginia, and Alabama.

There are several ways we will notify you about job opportunities or networking opportunities.

  • Purdue’s MGMT 48800 course via the Center for Career Opportunities (CCO) provided data found that Purdue graduates had about $5,000 bump in their starting salary if they have had one or more internship or co-op experiences.  For Purdue engineering students, going to the CCO for help at least once during their college career increased their starting salary by $2,599.
  • The beginning of the fall semester is the best time to find full time and internship opportunities.  There are several events that will help you prepare for Industrial Roundtable (Sept 13th and 14th h in person & 15th virtual) and the Civil Engineering Career Fair (Oct 13th in person, Oct 18th virtual). The CE Career Fair already has their information sessions penciled in the night of October 12th.    There is no other information at this time on the format of the IR career fair.  Several of you have already asked me if you will need to preregister, which was required for both in person and virtual last year.  Pre COVID, you would stand in link to speak with an employee.  They have no released that information yet.  I will let you all know when I hear more about both fairs.
  • The CCO has resources that can help you in the job search. They can review your resume, give a mock interview, and offer workshops to aid you in the process of looking for employment.  They also have information sessions listed that are scheduled through CCO.  Check here for all CCO related events on campus: https://www.cco.purdue.edu/Calendar    Hopefully you read my email about the infosessions for EHS/Eng/Supply Chain positions.  If you haven’t read my email, please read them as I provide specific, time sensitive job-related information to EEEs this way.
  • Companies are starting to “visit” Purdue to start looking for potential employees. I say visit because it seems many are still doing virtual information sessions, some of which may you have to RSVP for (see CCO calendar link above) ahead of time.   If you are really interested in a company, it is a good idea to attend their information session-this is how companies determine that you are “really interested” in working for.
  • Did you know you can even practice your interview skills at the CCO?  You can schedule a mock interview through them.  This is a great way to practice your sales pitch!  You can schedule a mock interview Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm here under “Undergraduates-Peer Mock Interview:  https://www.cco.purdue.edu/Students/WhatWeOffer
  • Don’t forget I will be giving a workshop geared on preparing EEE students for job opportunities.  The “Job Tune-Up Seminar” is Thursday Sept 8th from 3 to 5pm in MSEE 239. As an environmental engineer who has worked in your field, I will give overall tips and advice in addition to answering your questions!   There will also be a panel of EEE undergraduate students to discuss their past work experiences and how they obtained their jobs. There may even be another guest this year!

Job Tune Up Seminar by Ms. Whelton

Thursday, September 8 at 3:00pm in MSEE 239.  Come and go as your schedule allows.

Led by Ms. Meg Whelton.  As an environmental engineer who has worked in your field, she will give overall tips and advice in addition to answering your questions! This is a great preparation tool prior to Industrial Roundtable.  See attached flyer.

Sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students are welcome.

Job Opportunity: Student Position in REM’s Hazardous Materials Group

If you are looking for work during the semester, consider this environmentally related opportunity in Purdue's Radiological and Environmental Management office. See information on REM. Please note that the location isn’t in core campus and will require transportation. If you are interested, contact Ms. Whelton (mwhelton@purdue.edu) with your resume; you could also include a cover letter.  More info on creating cover letters is found here. I recommend pdf form with your name as the title.

Student position:  We have a student position open in REM’s hazardous materials group.  It pays $13/hr. Up to 20hrs/wk.  An EEE student will be working this fall, but we are still short staffed and could use some help.  Data entry, assisting on pickups, doing container returns, etc.  They will need transportation to our building on the southside of the tracks.
