Sp24 New Course - Exploring Alternative Career Path

Sp24 New Course - Exploring Alternative Career Path

In Spring 2024, I am teaching a new 3-credit hour course that may be of interest to some of your graduate students.

The course is ENE 59500, Exploring Alternative Career Paths as an Engineering Educator.  It is available both on campus (CRN  26048) and online (CRN  19011).

The course covers career path options and some important skills for engineers with (or seeking) advanced degrees who want to communicate technical information to students, teachers, industry employees, the public, policymakers, etc. but do not want a tenure-track faculty position. It gives those engineers a chance to learn about some positions they might hold in universities, pre-college schools, non-profit organizations, industry, and government.  Students will also have an opportunity to practice a few relevant skills such as (1) making a professional development plan to prepare for such a position, (2) finding open positions and writing an application cover letter; and (3) writing an abbreviated version of a proposal to seek funding for projects they would like to carry out.

If you or your students have questions about the course, please contact me at fentiman@purdue.edu.
