- Demonstrated experience in research and analysis, with strong writing skills.
- Ability to manipulate data and data imagery charts using Excel and web-based applications.

SALARY: $1,868.66 biweekly (exempt, salaried position)

STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). STAR is a Global Health talent hub. Through fellowships, internships, and strategic partnerships, STAR supports building the capacity of diverse global health professionals and organizations at all levels to make inclusive, collaborative, and innovative contributions to global health. STAR participants collaborate in the development of systems and tools that strengthen and sustain the local and global health response.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Background:
USAID provides global technical leadership on HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment and monitors the impact of the Agency's HIV/AIDS programs. Introduction:
The Youth Engagement Intern (Intern) will work within the Youth Branch which is part of the Priority Populations Integration and Rights (PPIR) Division in the Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) within the Global Health Bureau. OHA has primary responsibility for leading the Agency's efforts within President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a multibillion, multifaceted approach to combating the disease around the world. The Youth Branch (GH/OHA/PPIR/YTH) provides technical leadership on policies and programs relating to adolescents. The Branch supports USAID field programs to scale up programming addressing youth needs through positive youth development (PYD) and systematic integration of youth engagement for high quality programming across the continuum of HIV prevention, treatment, and support services focusing largely on youth ages 10-24.
Reporting structure:
The Intern will receive technical guidance from the PPIR Youth Branch Chief, who will serve as their Point of Contact.
OUTCOMES
By the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:
- Enhanced technical knowledge in HIV/AIDS programming.
- Familiarity with USAID and PEPFAR programming.
- Improved skills and experience in the analysis, interpretation, and application of data.
Essential Duties:
- Review of DREAMS Ambassadors roles and responsibilities across DREAMS countries with recommendations on opportunities to strengthen their engagement.
- Review of central and Mission mechanism’s efforts to engage youth with opportunities to strengthen their engagement.
- Develop presentation for PPIR and Prevention, Care, and Treatment (PCT) divisions on the importance of youth engagement across USAID PEPFAR programs.
- Analysis of youth outcomes in programs proactively engaging youth versus those not engaging youth in at least one country.
- Develop list of recommendations for OHA regarding opportunities to strengthen youth engagement in USAID PEPFAR programs.
Anticipated learning outcomes:
All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*approximately 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:
- Gain exposure to HIV/AIDS programming and youth engagement through global health programming.
- Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months.
- Demonstrated experience in research and analysis, with strong writing skills.
- Ability to manipulate data and data imagery charts using Excel and web-based applications.
- This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks, pending lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions.
- US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
Additional skills (preferred):
- Fluency in Spanish, French, or Portuguese preferred.
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS preferred.
