School of Chemical Engineering to Honor Six Outstanding Chemical Engineers for 2015

On September 24, 2015, the School of Chemical Engineering will present Norm Kidder (BSChE ’73), John Klier (MSChE ’86, PhD ’89), Seung Bin Park (PhD ’88), Julia Myers Ross (BSChE ’90), Charles E. Smith (BSChE ’80) and Vijay Swarup (BSChE ’86) with the 2015 Outstanding Chemical Engineer Award.

The 2015 Outstanding Chemical Engineer Award recipients are:

  • Norm Kidder (BSChE ’73) is President and Chief Executive Officer of Lomar Corporation, a holding company with high-technology manufacturing subsidiaries in Beaverton, Oregon, and Mount Prospect, Illinois. With annual sales revenues of $240 million and a team of 720 people, Lomar Corporation is focused on electronic communications systems for professional audio markets, elementary and secondary schools, and acute-care hospitals.

    In addition to his Purdue degree, Norm received an MS in management from the Sloan School at MIT in 1975.
     
  • John Klier (MSChE ’86, PhD ’89) is the Global R&D Director for Performance Materials and Chemicals segment at Dow. His responsibilities include setting a vision for innovation, leading the execution of that vision, driving new product and process introductions and growing the value of the innovation pipeline.

    In addition to his Purdue degrees, John earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from MIT in 1984.
     
  • Seung Bin Park (PhD ’88) is Vice President for Planning and Budget at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Previously, he served as Dean of the College of Engineering for four years, following a six-year appointment as Head of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department. He also previously served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at the Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers.

    In addition to his Purdue degree, Seung Bin received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University in 1977 and an MS from KAIST in 1979.
     
  • Julia Myers Ross (BSChE ’90) is Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology and Constellation Professor of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

    In addition to her Purdue degree, Julia earned a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Rice University in 1995.
     
  • Charles E. Smith (BSChE ’80) is President and CEO of CountryMark Cooperative Holding Corp. (CountryMark). Based in Indiana, CountryMark’s operations encompass oil exploration and production, refining, and distribution of refined products to its branded retailers.

    In addition to his Purdue degree, Charlie is a graduate of the Hoosier Fellows program at Indiana University’s Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence.
     
  • Vijay Swarup (BSChE ’86) is Vice President of Research and Development for ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company, a position he has held since November 2014.

    After graduating from Purdue, where he obtained a BS in Chemistry as well as a BSChE, Vijay earned his PhD from Rutgers University in 1990.
